Thomas is a guy who is down on his luck. His bosses son makes his life a living he'll because his daddy has money and is his boss so he has to take his crap. After a hard day's work he is excited to come home to the girl he loves and his best friend. His dog Baxter. When he arrived she is not there she has taken everything and just left a mountain of debt. She even took his best friend Baxter. He has to work in the virtual world selling quest ready characters for people too lazy to do it themselves. While in the virtual world building a custom made character, who does he run into but his bosses son Crawford. He is just as big a duck in the virtual world as in the real world. Thomas meets a goblin while out leveling his character and just before he kills it it's speaks to him and his world is flipped upside down. While fleeing from Crawford he realizes it is not about the money anymore, he has only one friend in the world and he will do anything to help him. This book is great for any litrpg fan out there. I enjoyed this book and I think you will also. You could say it's about a boy and his dog. You could also say that it is a love story. I will instead say that it is about overcoming loss, prejudices, and the bad guy
Quite the page turner, I finished in a weekend. The story is pretty predictable, but that didn't ruin my enjoyment at all.
The RPG elements were fun. Especially seeing the characters level up messages.
Looks like first book for author, I look forward to more.
Almost no game aspects. The ones present were weak and unbelievable. MC is a whinebag. Doesn't know how to game. Storyline literally put me to sleep twice.
This was just not good writing. I skipped pages at a time just to escape the drivel of the MC.
I was pleasantly surprised by The Goblin's Shadow by Kyle Vauss. If anything, I would consider this work a bit of a hidden nugget. Elements of style that I think will improve with future works by Vauss.

Tom is a gamer hardened by life; Gabbers is a digital goblin in an RPG virtual world with the gift to speak to 'monsters'. Gabbers appeals to what is left of Tom's humanity--and offers him special loot besides--if Tom helps Gabbers escape the rich player/hunter trying to kill the goblin. Along the way they become friends, and Tom will have to make hard choices about what it means to be human.
For me this was a book that tried hard to be four stars, but never quite made it. The beginning (before the goblin), and the ending were weaker than the middle, where you'll find good bits. The litrpg elements were also weak. Leveling up, the special loot, were largely irrelevant, other than that level 10 represented a decision on whether or not to sell the character.
This book reminds me of those books that collect 3-4 deep in the old second hand stores. You know the ones I mean, where you pick it up to look at the cover and smile, and put back down. To put it another way, would I read the next book in the series (should there be one), no. On the other hand, I would pick up another book from this author? Yes.
